Время-то есть, да писать нет возможности.
Мысль убивающий страх:
Не перейти бы границ осторожности,
Голову держит в тисках!
Утром мы наше село посещали,
Где я родился и взрос.
Сердце, подвластное старой печали,
Сжалось; в уме шевельнулся вопрос: Новое время — свободы, движенья,
Земства, железных путей.
Что ж я не вижу следов обновленья
В бедной отчизне моей?
Те же напевы, тоску наводящие,
С детства знакомые нам,
И о терпении новом молящие,
Те же попы по церквам.
В жизни крестьянина, ныне свободного,
Бедность, невежество, мрак.
Где же ты, тайна довольства народного?
Ворон в ответ мне прокаркал: «дурак!»
Я обругал его грубым невежею.
На телеграфную нить
Он пересел. «Не донос ли депешею
Хочет в столицу пустить?»
Глупая мысль, но я, долго не думая,
Метко прицелился. Выстрел гремит:
Падает замертво птица угрюмая,
Нить телеграфа дрожит…
