31 октября 1943 года началась Керченско-Эльтигенская десантная операция войск Северо-Кавказского фронта (командующий генерал И.Е. Петров), сил Черноморского флота (командующий адмирал Л.А. Владимирский) и Азовской военной флотилии.
Целью операции было нанесение удара северо-восточнее Керчи и Эльтигена, освобождение города и порта Керчь, овладение портом Камыш-Бурун и дальнейшее освобождение Крыма.
Операция завершилась 11 декабря захватом оперативного плацдарма под Керчью.
