Об опыте перевода «Охоты за турами» Коста на английский язык.

Помимо «аула», «сакли» и «чабуров», проблема возникла уже с названием — как «обозвать» туров в английском?
Вариантов было несколько: от wild oxen до wild bulls. Оказалось, все куда проще и можно обойтись даже без сносок — даже в скудном английском есть слово “tur” (1 скриншот). Думается мне, это очень показательный пример того, почему переводчику нужно много читать на языке перевода.

Для меня было также открытием, что слово “aul” в английском давно есть, лексикографируется и используется. «Сакли» в английском я не нашёл, и изначально хотел обобщить словом hut (хижина), что, конечно, сильно бьёт по атмосферности текста. Посему, было решено сакли транслитерировать, сделав сноску — спасибо Вове Габисову за настойчивость в этом вопросе (скриншот 2 и 3).

At the start of 2018, the company attempted to launch an Initial Coin Offering (ICO) which would enable it to enable payments (and earn the cash that comes from doing so). The initial signals were promising, especially given Telegram’s user base is already fairly crypto-savvy. Given the pro-privacy stance of the platform, it’s taken as a given that it’ll be used for a number of reasons, not all of them good. And Telegram has been attached to a fair few scandals related to terrorism, sexual exploitation and crime. Back in 2015, Vox described Telegram as “ISIS’ app of choice,” saying that the platform’s real use is the ability to use channels to distribute material to large groups at once. Telegram has acted to remove public channels affiliated with terrorism, but Pavel Durov reiterated that he had no business snooping on private conversations. Overall, extreme levels of fear in the market seems to have morphed into something more resembling concern. For example, the Cboe Volatility Index fell from its 2022 peak of 36, which it hit Monday, to around 30 on Friday, a sign of easing tensions. Meanwhile, while the price of WTI crude oil slipped from Sunday’s multiyear high $130 of barrel to $109 a pop. Markets have been expecting heavy restrictions on Russian oil, some of which the U.S. has already imposed, and that would reduce the global supply and bring about even more burdensome inflation. Friday’s performance was part of a larger shift. For the week, the Dow, S&P 500 and Nasdaq fell 2%, 2.9%, and 3.5%, respectively. Recently, Durav wrote on his Telegram channel that users' right to privacy, in light of the war in Ukraine, is "sacred, now more than ever."
