هر زمان که واکنش شدیدی نسبت به موقعیتی معمولی نشان می‌دهیم، در واقع بخشی از روان‌مان فعال شده که هنوز التیام نیافته است. گبور مته می‌گوید: "هیچ محرک بیرونی نمی‌تواند چنین انفجاری درونت ایجاد کند، مگر آنکه در درونت زخمی ناتمام وجود داشته باشد. در این نگاه، «تریگر» دشمن ما نیست، بلکه پیام‌رسانی است از درون؛ از بخشی که سال‌هاست در سکوت درد می‌کشد و حالا فقط می‌خواهد دیده شود. وظیفه‌ی ما سرکوب احساس نیست، بلکه مشاهده و مسئولیت‌پذیری در برابر آن است. وقتی به جای واکنش‌گری (Reactivity)، پاسخ‌گر می‌شویم (Responsiveness)، در واقع از نقش قربانیِ گذشته خارج می‌شویم و به جای فرار، به درون زخم می‌نگریم. و این همان لحظه‌ای‌ست که درمان آغاز می‌گردد.
