وإن كانوا لا يعرفون لكون الكِبر الذي ملأ قلوبهم أوهمهم الحقَّ باطلًا والباطلَ حقًّا فالأمر أعجب.
وذلك أنه في أي نقاش بين اثنين توجد حجج، ولكن الحجج في كثير من الأحيان لا يسلَّم لها بسبب عناد الطرف المقابل وسفسطته ومماحكته، وأمر السفسطة والمماحكة شديد على النفوس.
فمهما كانت الحجة قوية حين تصدم بجدار المماحكة تظهر وكأنها لا شيء، وهي شيء ولكنها ما لاقت إنصافًا.
والسفسطة والمماحكة لا تجرِّمها القوانين الوضعية بل هي حق مكفول باسم حرية الرأي، وداروينيًّا المكابرة لا علاقة لها بالبقاء، ولا توجد آخرة يُحاسَب فيها المكابر والمسفسط.
فما هو عزاء اللاديني هنا؟ ولماذا يتحمَّل هذا العذاب العاجل؟
لو تدبَّر في هذا الأمر لظهر له عظيم مناقضة ما يذهب إليه للعقل والفطرة.
فحسنة الإنصاف لا يثاب عليها في معتقده، وسيئة المكابرة لا يعاقب عليها.
